Debating Junk Food

Group Debating1A group of Year 10 learners took part in a cross-schools debating competition at the end of April.

The team of six were against Tong High School and had to debate against the motion: ‘All junk food should be banned’, discussing big brands like Burger King etc. The event was organised by Ahead Partnership and sponsored by healthy snack company, Calbee.

The team prepared for a few weeks beforehand, researching various statistics and case studies and organising their arguments. They showed excellent communication and research skills and, on the day itself, they all spoke confidently in front of four judges showing plenty of passion – Hayden in particular commanded the stage in the closing speech.

Unfortunately, we didn’t make it through to the final which would have taken place at Pinsent Masons law firm. It was the school’s first cross-schools competition however and with more practice, we’re confident these learners and any others interested in debating, will improve and be victorious.
