Advent, from the Latin ‘adventus’ meaning arrival, is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for Christmas.
It begins on Advent Sunday, the Sunday closest to 30 November, and lasts until midnight on Christmas Eve. Advent Sunday is the first of four Sundays before 25 December.
Many churches include an Advent wreath or crown in their Advent services. Advent calendars are also a popular way of counting down the days until Christmas.
