Sport

Within Sport there are two Options; GCSE Physical Education and BTEC Level 2 Sport.  BTEC Level 2 Sp   Both of our Key Stage Four qualifications lead onto BTEC Level 3 Sport within Post 16.

Year 12 Unit 1 & 2

Term 1
Key Learning Objectives Know the structure and Function of the skeletal and muscular systems as well as the Cardiovascular and Respiratory systems. .
Key Activities / Homework Students will complete a range of tasks that will enable them to name each of the necessary muscles, bones and organs. They will also develop an understanding of the function and role each system has in sport through discussion and research based tasks.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessments.

Term 2
Key Learning Objectives Know the different types of energy systems and understand the body’s response to acute exercise.
Key Activities / Homework Students will take part in both theory and practical activities looking at how their body’s respond to different factors such as energy drinks in fitness based activities.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessments.

Term 3
Key Learning Objectives Know the long-term effects of exercise on the body systems and be able to investigate the physiological effects of exercise on the body systems.
Key Activities / Homework Students will research and test the effects of exercise on the body.

Year 12 Unit 3 & 7

Term 1
Key Learning Objectives Know a range of laboratory-based and field-based fitness tests. To be able to administer appropriate fitness tests and interpret the results of fitness tests and provide feedback.
Key Activities / Homework Students will complete a range of fitness tests such as the multi-stage fitness test and hand grip dynometer test . They will establish an understanding of the norms of such tests and an understanding of how to interpret data.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessments and the practical demonstration of fitness tests.

Term 2
Key Learning Objectives To be able to use Health screening techniques.

U3: To be able to carry out risk assessments and plan a safe sporting activity.

Key Activities / Homework Students will test out a range of health screening methods and discuss their validity and results.

U3: Students will observe risk assessments of sporting activities; establish the information required in a risk assessment and the information gained and provided from them.

Term 3

Year 13 – Unit 10

Term 1
Key Learning Objectives Be able to participate in outdoor and adventurous activities and be able to review own performance in outdoor and adventurous activities.
Key Activities / Homework Students will take part in kayaking and Rock Climbing over a 6 week programme. They will gain a Level 1 NICAS and BCU 1 star award. During this time they will complete diary entries. Following the practical sessions they will evaluate their performance in both sports.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessments in both practical performance and presentation formats.

Term 2
Key Learning Objectives Know about the organisation and provision of outdoor and adventurous activities.
Key Activities / Homework Through research and theory based activities students will develop a deeper understanding of kayaking, rock climbing, skiing and an air based sport.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessments.

Term 3
Key Learning Objectives Know the safety and environmental considerations associated with outdoor and adventurous activities.
Key Activities / Homework Following on with the four highlighted OAA sports they will establish the risks posed by environment and weather. They will understand how to act in such emergencies i.e. distress signals and also know the guidelines put in place for these selected sports.

Year 13 – Unit 11

Term 1
Key Learning Objectives Know the concepts of nutrition and digestion and energy intake and expenditure in sports performance.
Key Activities / Homework Students will complete theory based tasks to enable them to name each of the digestive organs and what occurs at each point of digestion. Furthermore they will look at the functions of digestion and the key importance of each stage. In addition students will gain an understanding of micro and macro nutrients and the energy that can be take from each.

Term 2
Key Learning Objectives Know the relationship between hydration and sports performance.
Key Activities / Homework Students will test different hydration methods in sport within fitness activities. They will look at hydration strategies such as hyper hydration and the impact dehydration and effective hydration has in sport. They will create their own sports drinks based on their findings.

Term 3
Key Learning Objectives To be able to plan a diet appropriate for a selected sports activity.
Key Activities / Homework Students will research diets for specific sports. Look at the needs of individuals and how this is catered for through a diet. They will prepare and cook a meal for a specific athlete based on their findings. Furthermore they will look at the impact of the seasons and the strategies for prior and post event.

Year 13 Unit 13

Term 1
Key Learning Objectives Know the qualities, characteristics and roles of effective sports leaders and the importance of psychological factors in leading sports activities.
Key Activities / Homework Discussions and debates surrounding the qualities and characteristics a good leader. Theory based tasks to analyse the impact of good and bad qualities of a leader in sport.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessment in the form of a video.

Term 2
Key Learning Objectives Be able to plan and lead a sports activity.
Key Activities / Homework Practical and theory based tasks to breakdown the format of a successful session. In addition students will deliver their planned sporting sessions to a group of Year 7 students.
Assessments Students will be assessed through controlled assessment in the form of a practical assessment of their leadership and the written planning of a sporting session.

Term 3
Key Learning Objectives Be able to review Leadership of a sporting activity.
Key Activities / Homework SMART targets and goal setting will be broken down and the possible opportunities to develop leadership in sport will be researched.
