Performing Arts

Term 1

Key Learning Objectives This unit consolidates and extends the work pursued in year 7. Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of dance and drama techniques, as well as learn to create, rehearse, perform and evaluate work. This term they will be learning about the skills they need to create and perform high quality dance and drama, They will be introduced to the Commedia Dell’Arte and the genre of British Pantomime. They will learn about stock characters and the Lazzi. They will explore ways of developing the physicality of a role. They will create performance based on traditional Commedia plots and action. They will learn about the traditions of British Pantomime and work to create their own mini version for performance.
Key Activities / Homework Learners are set a variety of practical and written homework over the term. These may include revising key words, practical choreography tasks or self-evaluations of their practical performance work.
Assessments Learners are given regular formative feedback on both their written and practical work about how they can make further progress. Learners will be assessed against a Mastery programme that focuses on their understanding and application of the Learning Muscles
Suggest reading & support materials Learners will be given a list of literacy key words, which they can revisit to embed understanding. Learners can also access electives afterschool to further enhance their practical work.
Term 2

Key Learning Objectives This unit builds upon the work delivered in Term 1 and focuses on the study of the     Musical Theatre genre. Learners develop their understanding of characterisation, stage action and plotline by studying, writing and presenting a section from a Musical Theatre performance. They will develop their understanding of dance choreography and audience awareness through the study of Musical Theatre and set piece choreography .
Key Activities / Homework Learners are set a variety of practical and written homework over the term. These may include revising key words, practical choreography tasks or self-evaluations of their practical performance work.
Assessments Learners are given regular formative feedback on both their written and practical work about how they can make further progress. Every half term learners are also graded for assessment. Learners will be assessed against a Mastery programme that focuses on their understanding and application of the Learning Muscles

Term 3

Key Learning Objectives Performance In the final term learners will apply all the skills they have learnt this year in both dance and drama. They will combine the two disciplines to create one final piece of performance. They will devise a piece for a Site Specific performance. They will be given the opportunity to plan and organise a performance at a given site within the Academy or beyond. They will be asked to create an original performance piece, creating storyline and choreograph movement phrases.
