British Values

Bradford Academy is fully committed to living out the school vision which echoes the fundamental British Values, of Democracy, Rule of Law Individual Liberty, Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

These values are promoted through our curriculum, commitment to providing an inclusive approach to the curriculum and wider curriculum, the range of displays and assembly content which celebrate different aspects of British society and specific delivery through our PSHE session and character curriculum. We also recognise that the development of these values is most successful when they are modelled for our young people to emulate. Our positive behaviour system and the way staff interact with each other, and learners provides a positive role model for your community to emulate.

We promote democracy through our student leadership programme who help SLT change the school to continually improve learner experiences.  Holding mock elections to raise awareness of national events and to assist learning about UK’s democratic process. Finally, we have student voice to assist us in gathering information about school life, including lessons, extracurricular offers and personal development opportunities.

We promote the rule of law through our positive behaviour policy that provides learners with a set of rules and expectations that apply to everyone. A set of expectations and policies for staff to adhere to. Policies such as the IT acceptable use policy to promote safe and positive use of the internet. Through our PSHE and Character Curriculum programme we address specific social issues and connections to the UK law using links with local agencies such as the Pol-Ed platform and local charities charities/organisations.

We promote individual liberty through providing a broad and balance curriculum that equips all learners with the knowledge and skills they need to be able to make informed choices about their future. The options process in year 9 is based on learner preferences and we continue to work hard to ensure all learners get their first choices of options. We introduce learners to a range of social issues, belief systems and cultures so they are informed and knowledgeable about the richness diversity provides and so that they can make more informed choices for themselves and ask critical questions in a safe environment.

We promote mutual respect through our school vision that puts respect and responsibility at the heart of all that we do, we respect each other and are responsible for our behaviour and choices. Our daily collective worship covers a range of social, cultural, moral and spiritual topics, allowing learners to explore the diversity in the world, social issues and national awareness days such as Remembrance Day, Holocaust Memorial Day, International Day of Peace and Democracy Week. Curriculum subjects like RE, PSHE, Languages, Art & Design Technology all support in exploring a range of cultures and beliefs. Adhering to our policies that promote the importance of equality such as, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy.

We have tolerance of those with different beliefs and faiths through celebrating the major faiths and belief systems represented in our school through our daily Collective Worship content, specifically Faith Friday, where we focus on different faiths and belief systems.  The curriculum supports leaners to develop their understanding of a range of cultures and belief systems.  Learners contribute to assemblies so we can draw in inspiration from different people in our community to mark special events in different cultures and beliefs.

Prevent

What is PREVENT?

PREVENT is a government strategy operating across the UK. The aim of Prevent is to stop people from being drawn into supporting extremist causes, supporting terrorism, or becoming terrorists. The strategy covers all types of terrorism and extremism including the extreme far right, violent Islamist groups, LEFT-WING, ANARCHIST & SINGLE-ISSUE TERRORISM and other causes. Prevent also extends to supporting the rehabilitation and disengagement of those already involved in terrorism.

How does the PREVENT strategy apply to schools?

From July 2015 all schools have a duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism and have ‘due regard of the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’ (Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act). This is also known as the PREVENT Strategy and its primary concern is to protect children and young people from radicalisation by extremist ideas and ideologies. Extremism is the vocal or active opposition to Fundamental British Values.

What does this mean at Bradford Academy?

The school vision centres around the traits of respect for others and responsibility for our own actions whilst be resilient and keep working to be the best person we can be. The work we do to live out this vision supports our learners to become positive members of their communities, supports the promotion of the British Values and the prevent strategy. We explore cultures, belief systems and social issues through our subject, PSHE, character and Collective Worship curriculums, allowing us to celebrate diversity. We support our learners by establishing a tolerant and safe environment to discuss topics and help learners to understand how they can participate in debates whilst being informed to make positive decisions. Educate Against Hate – Prevent Radicalisation & Extremism
