Pupil Premium, Sports Grants and Catch-up Funding

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium Grant, introduced in 2011 and which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address underlying inequalities between children who are eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the learners who need it most.

Pupil Premium is an additional grant given to learners who:

  • have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years (£935)
  • have been in care for more than six months (£1900) or adopted (of which £500 is retained by the Virtual Headteacher)
  • have parents/carers in the armed services, who face particular challenges (£300)

At Bradford Academy we have developed many robust intervention strategies over a number of years; all of which are designed to support each individual learner to achieve their potential. We constantly strive to ‘narrow the gap’ between different groups of learners and fulfil one of our core aims, “to raise standards for all learners by sustaining and enhancing performance and to develop the whole child”.

In addition our research and evidence base has enabled us to formulate a set of principles to guide our use of the Pupil Premium Grant

  • We will ensure that Pupil Premium funding is spent on the target group.
  • We will maintain high expectations of the target group.
  • We will thoroughly analyse which pupils are under-achieving and endeavour to work out why.
  • We will be relentless in our pursuit of high quality teaching, not interventions to compensate for poor teaching.
  • We will use achievement data to check interventions are effective and make adjustments where necessary.
  • We will have a senior leader with oversight of how PP funding is being spent.
  • We will ensure that teachers know which pupils eligible for Pupil Premium.
  • We will endeavour to demonstrate impact.
  • We will have a named governor who will oversee and challenge our use of the Pupil Premium.

Sports Premium

What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding per annum for the academic years to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

Purpose of the funding

  • All schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how we do it with in 6 main areas:
  • hire specialist PE teachers hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • run sports activities with other schools

16 – 19 Tuition Fund statement:

This funding has been allocated by the Government as a one off payment and will be used in accordance with the purpose detailed in the guidance, and used to prioritise support for disadvantages learners, to help mitigate the disruption to learning because of Coronavirus (Covid-19). Our share of the funding is £6353.

The guidance relating to this funding means that:

  • Only learners who do not have a 5-9 passes in either or both Mathematics and English Language at the end of Key Stage 4 can be supported by this fund.
  • The funding is not limited to supporting GCSE Mathematics and English Language but can be for any aim in the learner’s programme of study.
  • The need for support will be agreed determined and agreed between the eligible learners, teaching staff and the Assistant Principal for Key Stage 5.
  • Typically the support will be in the form of small group tuition and the purchase of additional resources both physical and online, as well as individual bespoke support which will include, but will not be limited to personal development skills, positive mental health and exam preparation.
